Easy Tip: Open an Excel file for Editing

Easy Tip Do you open Excel files (or text files) and then use the Save Copy As command to make a copy of it for editing? If yes, then this tip will save you some time. It is possible to copy the file at the same time as you open it! This also works with delimited ASCII and CSV files.

Step 1.
  • If using a 64 bit version of MapInfo Pro: In the Open Gallery choose Table.
  • If using a 32 bit version of MapInfo Pro: In the File menu, click Open...to display the Open dialog box.
Step 2: In the Files of type drop-down list, select Microsoft Excel (*.xls), Delimited ASCII (*.txt), Lotus 1-2-3 (*.wk1, *.wks, *.wk3, *.wk4), or Comma Delimited CSV (*.csv).

Easy tip Open Excel

Step 3: Select the Create copy in MapInfo format for read/write option. It is highlighted in the screen shot above.

Step 4: Select the desired file you wish to open and click Open. You will then go through the usual additional steps, depending on the type of file you are opening.

Additional comments:

Step 3 and 4 can be interchanged but if you are in the habit of double clicking a file to open it you will want to tick the Create copy in MapInfo format for read/write check box first.

This tip requires MapInfo Pro v8.0 or later.
