Work Smarter, Not Harder with the Table Structure Manager

64 bit MapInfo Professional v12.0 includes a tool which allows you to compare and modify the structure of multiple tables at once. This tool is called the Table Structure Manager. Those of you who have used one of our Discover 3D or Engage 3D products may be familiar with this already as this was previously supplied with these add-on solutions. As it is a very useful general purpose tool (and a popular one) we decided to add it to MapInfo Professional v12.0.

Using the Table Structure Manager

To access the Table Structure Manager, right-click on a table in the Table List window.

The Table Structure Manager dialog box appears.

Above: The structure of the chosen table appears. This is the reference to which other tables can now be compared. If needed it is possible to change the reference by choosing a different table from the Base Table drop down list.

Below: Use the Ctrl and Shift keys select one or more tables to compare.

step 2

Modifying the Structure of the Tables

The Table Structure Manager allows you to do more than just compare the structure of the tables. It is also possible to add, remove, copy and change the data columns of your tables. What makes this really useful is you can work across multiple tables at the same time!

This option allows you to add new fields to one or more tables.

This option allows you to delete fields from one or more tables. In the screen shot below, different fields have been selected for deletion. Note that a warning is given.

Before deleting a warning is given as this operation cannot be undone.

The Copy command allows you to copy one or more fields from one table to one or more of the other chosen tables.

Three fields have been chosen for copying. The next step is to choose which of the other tables the fields should be copied to.

The Edit option allows you to rename, change the types or the order of the columns in your tables.

All of these commands can work across multiple tables at once. For example, in the screen shot below a column has been selected across four tables to be renamed.

And there is more...

  • Check out the option Display Object Column. This provides a facility to tell you if the table has objects, how many records contain an object and can even break down the different types of objects.
  • Text report - this is a handy summary about your tables.
  • The columns in your tables can be displayed in terms of matching column names or in their native (original) order.
