MapInfo Professional 12.5 is coming soon!

64 bit We are very excited to bring you MapInfo Professional v12.5. This is a transformational release with a number of major enhancements! Here is a quick survey of the major improvements you can expect.

32 and 64 bit versions

For version 12.5 we are releasing both a 32 bit version and for the first time, a full 64 bit version!

New Layout Designer! No more switching back and forth between your Map and Layout windows!

An all-new Layout Designer makes it much easier to produce high quality output for printing. This capability is part of both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The following screen shot shows the Layout Designer as it will appear in the 32 bit version of MapInfo Professional. (The 64 bit version will use a Ribbon tab instead of the embedded toolbar.)

Improved performance with multiple core support

The object processing operations buffer, erase, erase outside and split will take advantage of all of the CPUs in your computer. This can dramatically reduce the time needed to complete complex object editing tasks. Multiple core support is in both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

In addition, the 64 bit version provides improved performance across a number of other operations. This is primarily due to the ability of the software to use more memory as compared to 32 bit releases. We will share more details in future articles.

Multiple-core/multi-threaded processing

When performing buffering, split, erase and erase outside operations, MapInfo Professional will take advantage of all the processors on your system. This can dramatically reduce the amount of time needed to complete these object processing operations. This is in both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. In addition to this, in the 64-bit version there are some other areas where performance is improved due to the ability to better use the computer’s memory. We’ll share more details in a future issue.

Additional data file format support

MapInfo Professional v12.5 also adds support for opening GML versions 2.1.2, 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 from both the "Open Universal Data" menu command and the FME Quick Translator. In addition, the FME Quick Translator can export the GML Simple Features Level 0 Profile (GML SF-0).

When is version 12.5 going to be released?

The 32 bit English version is scheduled to be released in late June. A 30 day free trial download will be posted as soon as the software is ready. The 64 bit English version is scheduled to be released later this year in October. The 32 bit localised versions should start appearing in September. The 64 bit localised versions have not been scheduled as of this writing. We will publish a schedule in a future issue.

Stay tuned! More to come!

There is more and we will go into more detail on the individual capabilities in future issues. We are also demonstrating the software at the MapInfo User Conference and at our various MapInfo Tour events around the world.
