Easy Tip: Setting the default column display for a Browser window

Easy Tip Is there a way I can only show certain columns in a browser every time I browse my table?

If you are constantly removing unneeded columns from the display of the Browser window then this tip will be a time saver. It is possible to control which columns will display and the order they will be displayed in, as a default.

The option is found in the Pick Fields dialog box. See below.

32 bit interface

The Pick Fields dialog box is accessed from the Browse menu. Also, in MapInfo Pro v11.0 and later, the Pick Fields command is available from the Browser window toolbar.

64 bit interface

In the new ribbon interface, the Pick Fields command is found in the Table tab.

Note that this capability is not making a permanent change to the structure of your table. The columns are hidden from view in the Browser window they are not permanently removed from the table.

How does it work?

For those who are technically curious, the configuration of which columns to display in the Browser window are stored in the .TAB file. This file is a definition of the table (column names, data types, etc). In addition to specifying the structure of the table, the TAB file is used to contain other information about the table.

The settings on which columns to display are stored as metadata in the TAB file.
