Easy Tip: Return your license before uninstalling!

Easy Tip This is a tip about license management. For those of you that use node locked license or distributed licenses, you can return a license before you uninstall MapInfo Pro. This should be done before a computer is decommissioned.

It is pretty easy too!

Returning Node Locked Licenses

If you are using a 64 bit release of MapInfo Pro, the command you need is in the Backstage area, in the Licensing tab.

New UI

If you are using a 32 bit release of MapInfo Pro, the command you need is in the Help menu.

Old UI

When not to return your license …

If you plan to reinstall MapInfo Pro, it is not necessary to return the license. If you uninstall the software you will be prompted to return the license. You can decline this and upon reinstalling, MapInfo Pro will run as before.

Do return your license…

If your computer system is being decommissioned or otherwise will not be used to run MapInfo Pro anymore then you should return the license. This will add it to the pool associated with your serial number and be available for another person to use.

What if my computer has a failure and it is not possible to return the license?

Let’s say you have a failure and your computer system needs to have the operating system and MapInfo Pro reinstalled. If you are using MapInfo Pro v12.0 or later, the licensing system will “recognise” that your computer previously had a license and will not decrement the count of used licenses. This facility was not present in earlier versions of MapInfo Pro.

What about Concurrent Use licenses?

The information above does not pertain to concurrent use licenses. A concurrent use license is checked out when MapInfo Pro starts up and is returned to your local license server when you exit MapInfo Pro.

If you have borrowed a concurrent use license you can return it before the specified borrow period is over by using the Return a Borrowed license command. This is in the same location as the commands mentioned above.

For more information on concurrent use licenses see the MapInfo Pro Install Guide. This is in your docs folder where MapInfo Pro is installed and is available from our Web site here.

Not using the latest version? Download a free trial.

Visit http://web.pb.com/miprov15 where you can download a free trial of the 32-bit release of MapInfo Pro v15.0.

Or, if you prefer the 64 bit release of v12.5 is also available from the same page. This is a next generation MapInfo Pro with a new ribbon based user interface and many exciting enhancements.

You can try both, they can run “side by side”.

Our next 64 bit release is v15.2 and is scheduled for October 2015.
