Easy Tip! Aligning objects in the Layout Window

ez I've divided this topic up into two short parts so as to cover the basics and then be able to focus in one what is new in MapInfo Professional v12.0. Part 1 applies to MapInfo Professional v12.0 and previous versions.

Part 1: How to align objects in the Layout Window

Well, it is pretty easy to get started. You need to select one or more Frames or objects in the Layout window and then choose the Layout > Align Objects command. This is available from the Layout menu or by right clicking in the Layout window.

The Align Objects command offers a number of options.

Aligning objects with respect to each other

When using the option to align objects with respect to each other, the objects will align to whichever one is to the furthest extreme of the chosen direction. This may be easier to understand with an example. For example, if you align objects on their left edges with respect to each other then the objects will align to whichever one is the farthest to the left.

Aligning objects with respect to the entire layout

The option to arrange things with respect to the "entire layout" is generally just useful for centring objects and usually only when working with a single page Layout.

If you center objects with respect to each other the smaller object will be centred within the larger object. This is possible for both horizontal or vertical alignment.

Part 2: New in MapInfo Professional v12.0: Quick access to aligning objects.

MapInfo Professional v12.0 has made major improvements in a number of areas related to creating output. In the June issue we wrote about the new labeling capabilities. In the July issue we covered the improvements to the Scale bar.

A simple, but very handy improvement was made to make it quicker and easier to align objects to the Left, Right, Top and bottom. The Layout menu as well as the Layout window right click menu now has shortcuts to a number of options for Aligning objects.

These commands align objects with respect to each other. As such you will need to select multiple objects in order to take advantage of them.

New commands for aligning objects appear both in the Layout menu and in the right-click menu for the Layout window.
